SOLAR POWER
USACF’s biggest solar project is at our flagship project, the We Yone Learning Centre in Sierra Leone. When we built We Yone, we seized the opportunity to bring in a robust, innovative solar system to pilot with an eye towards future expansion.
Working closely with our Freetown-based colleague Morie Kamara we installed two systems from the innovative German company Zimpertec, showcasing approaches that prioritize safety and reliability.
Building on what we have learned from the success at We Yone, we are working to bring solar systems to our partner schools in our Hands-on Reading! program that will power lights, fans, and our “Bridge Project” digital libraries.
Looking ahead, a top goal is outfitting a “Solar Skills Workshop” at the learning center. Morie is an experienced trainer, and he’s ready to teach classes covering solar installation design, installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
Across the areas where USACF is active, people are eagerly embracing solar power. There is strong demand for people who can design, install, maintain, and repair solar systems. And we look forward to seeing our trainees out in the community bringing reliable, carbon-free, electricity to schools, libraries, and homes. We are ready to outfit our solar skills training center at the learning center and look forward to beginning training next year.
